Palm Beach County's Deparments of Environmental Resources Management and Parks and Recreation took a collaborative approach to saving two massive native live oak trees from being destroyed. The large-scale operation involved months of preparation prior to the relocation and installation for the 25 inch and 34 inch diameter live oak trees at their new home.

When trees of this species and caliper are transplanted, root pruning must be done 6 to 12 months prior to relocation so that a dense network of fine, water-absorbing feeder roots closer to the trunk have developed increase survivorship. Both of these trees were located next to each other making their final root ball enormous to move. Staff worked together across departments to ensure a successful transplant. Retaining mature hardwood trees in the urban canopy provide numerous ecological benefits including shade, reduction of utility bills, carbon sequestration, as well as habitat for many species.

The first leatherback nest in the state of Florida was recorded in Juno Beach on February 11, 2026.
