BEWARE OF UNLICENSED CONTRACTORS

By law, all Florida contractors must be licensed and insured. To avoid unlicensed contractors preying on storm victims, please take the following steps before hiring a contractor:

  • Confirm they are licensed and insured:
    • Florida Dept. of Business and Professional Regulation: Click here or call 850-487-1395
    • Palm Beach County: Call 561-233-5525 (Contractor Regulations c/o Ryan Perez)
  • Obtain at least three “WRITTEN” estimates from a licensed and insured contractor
  • Ask for proof of insurance
  • Ask and check for references
  • Make sure all work that requires a permit/inspection is officially approved in writing before a final payment is made.
  • Contact the local Palm Beach County Home Builders Association c/o Gold Coast Builders for a list of reliable contractors at 561-228-6137.
Warning Signs a Contractor may be unlicensed:
  • Door-to-door solicitation and/or requiring large down payment before beginning the work
  • If a contractor asks the property owner to pull a permit
  • Refuses to provide a written contract
  • Unable to provide a Certificate of Insurance
  • Advertisements that do not include the contractor license number
