Census 2020The U.S. Constitution requires a Census of the American population every ten years. The next decennial Census will take place in 2020. Census information is vital for governments and communities, and is a valuable guide for future planning efforts. Results of the Census are used to apportion government representatives and allocate federal funding to local governments. In order to facilitate an accurate and successful Census, Palm Beach County is currently working with local and federal officials throughout the Census process. This page describes the Census timeline, and provides more information on the efforts completed so far. Information and data will be added to this page as it becomes available.

2020 Census IPARC Presentation
The U.S. Census Bureau delivered 2020 population counts for apportionment on April 26, 2021. The PL-94 Redistricting Data was released in September. These data sets can be found on the

Phase 1: Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA) Program -
What? Local governments review residential addresses
- When? March 12, 2018 to June 30, 2018
- Why?
- To help ensure accurate count in Palm Beach County and help plan future needs
- To use for redistricting and to help distribute federal funds annually (more than $675 billion) for infrastructure, programs and services

- 6 Cities partnered with the County
- 11 Cities did not register and will accept the County's residential address count for their jurisdiction

- What? Review 2020 Census Tract and Block Group geography
- When? January 2019 to May 2019
- Why?
- These boundaries will be the basis for future Census tabulations, and all American Community Survey data beyond 2020.
- Data used for grant applications to fund community/regional development, education, agriculture, energy and environmental programs as well as other needed community improvements and enhancements.
- How?
- All municipalities should review the proposed 2020 Census Tracts and Block Groups within their jurisdictions.
- Maps will be provided on this webpage in April 2019.
- Define areas in order to obtain meaningful and relevant small area statistical data from the Census.

What? Decennial population totals used for redistricting and reapportionment by local governments
-
The redistricting process allows local governments to submit (a) suggested legal boundary updates as well as updates to other geographic areas and (b) voting district boundary updates conducted through the non-partisan liaison designated by each state. In early 2021, the Census Bureau announced that the statutory deadline for the delivery of redistricting data used for redrawing districts was delayed from April 1, 2021 to September 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and anomalies found in the census data. This delay will significantly compress the timeline for the County to develop updated Commission District boundaries, which is required by Florida Statute to be completed in an odd-numbered year.
