Bonefish Cove Restoration Project Update January 2025

Body

Bonefish Cove Habitat Restoration Project Update September 2024
  • Nearly all the fill needed to complete the north island at Bonefish Cove is on-site.
  • Once the island’s final shape is completed and the fill is compacted and placed to lines and grades (i.e. final intertidal elevations), limestone rocks will be placed along the outer rim of the island and the oyster reefs to the north and south of the island will be constructed.   This will be finalized in the next couple of months.
  • Once the north island and associated oyster reefs are completed, work will start on the southern island for the process to be repeated for this component.
  • Starting this month, the contractor has been approved to work on Sundays to help alleviate some of the traffic concerns due to bridge openings associated with the barge traffic during the weekdays.
  • Questions, please contact the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management at (561) 233-2451.

When completed the islands and oyster reefs will provide critical habitat for threatened shorebirds and protected native mangroves, while below water seagrass and oysters will colonize, improving water quality.
