The sand for the north island at Bonefish Cove is in the final stages of being graded to final elevations. Next stage is for limestone rock breakwaters to be installed around the island followed by oyster reefs to the north and south of the island. Sand is still needed/being delivered at the southern portion of the north island to finish forming the seagrass and oyster areas in this portion of the project.
-
The contractor is working concurrently on delivering sand to begin stockpiling material to form the south island and oyster reefs at the southern extent of the project. This new work area is within the project limits, but has increased the active construction footprint as you look out on the project location.
All areas where active construction is taking place are surrounded by yellow turbidity curtains that extend down through the water column to minimize the effects of turbidity as sand and rock are being placed in the water. Turbidity monitoring is conducted on a daily basis while construction activities are taking place and indicate the curtains are working to contain and minimize turbidity in the area.
There are several more months of construction left to complete all of the project components, including building the bird nesting mounds and planting both islands with red mangrove seedlings.
Questions, please contact the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management at (561) 233-2451.

When completed the islands and oyster reefs will provide critical habitat for threatened shorebirds and protected native mangroves, while below water seagrass and oysters will colonize, improving water quality. | Attachments |
